Man taken to hospital with laceration on leg following swim in Sunset Beach

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A person is recovering from an injury while in the water at a Brunswick County beach Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred in Sunset Beach, WWAY spoke to Police Chief Ken Klamar about what information is currently available.
He said a 911 caller reported a shark bite just before noon, but it’s unclear what actually caused the injury. The man was taken to the hospital. The victim is a 20-year-old man, but his name has not been released. It happened near the 11th St. beach access.
Chief Klamar said they believe some type of sea life caused the injury.
“The injury was to the lower leg; we believe it was caused by some sort of sea life. The caller identified that it was a shark bite, but we have no way to determine that,” Chief Klamar said.
Chief Klamar said anyone heading to the beach needs to be vigilant when they decide to get into the water because there is always the risk of suffering an injury from aquatic life.
We will share more information as it is made available.
