Manhole overflowing with wastewater stopped near Medical Center Drive

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — CFPUA crews stopped a sanitary sewer overflow near the intersection of Medical Center Drive and Wisteria Drive Friday afternoon.

Crews were notified about a manhole overflowing near 1099 Medical Center Drive at 2:14 p.m. Responders were able to clear a blockage in the sewer line and stop the spill by 2:40 p.m.

An estimated 780 gallons of untreated wastewater escaped, with some of that wastewater reaching a nearby creek. CFPUA crews are cleaning the area using Vactor trucks and continue to investigate the site of the spill.

CFPUA Environmental Management staff are conducting water sampling in the area, and the N.C. Division of Water Resources has been notified.
