Memorial Day Observances planned in the Cape Fear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several Memorial Day observance ceremonies will be held in the Wilmington area to remember and honor the brave men and women who have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial Day is May 26. Here is a list of events happening in the Cape Fear.

THURSDAY, May 22

11:00 a.m.
Robeson Community College will host a Memorial Day Service at 11:00 a.m. in the Military Affiliated Resource Center, located in Building 13, and it will conclude with a tribute at the flag poles. The guest speaker will be Mr. Tom Martin, a decorated veteran and minister. This event is free and open to the public.

FRIDAY, May 23

9:00 a.m.
The Town of Surf City will host A Memorial Day of Remembrance at 9:00 a.m. at Soundside Park, 517 Roland Avenue.

6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Pleasure Island will hold a fireworks display on the beach strand in front of the historic Carolina Beach Boardwalk and live music will be playing at the Gazebo stage. Music begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a fireworks display at 9:00 p.m. The event is free for spectators. Food and drink is available for purchase.

SATURDAY, May 24

11:00 a.m.
American Legion Post 167 and Auxiliary Unit 167 will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at the Hampstead Annex Auditorium. WWAY Evening Anchor Jeff Rivenbark will serve as the keynote speaker. Music will be provided by the Rocky Point Elementary School Orchestra. Following the indoor ceremony, the Topsail High School ROTC will perform the Rifle Volley and Taps out front of the Annex at the Flag Pole.

11:30 a.m.

Veterans Creative Arts will host a Women Veteran Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Dreams Center for Arts Education at 901 Fanning Street in Wilmington. Click here to register.

SUNDAY, May 25

No events planned.

MONDAY May 26

10:00 a.m.
The Battleship North Carolina will host their annual Memorial Day Observance Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on the battleship’s fantail, weather permitting. This ceremony has been held on the Battleship North Carolina since 1962 when the Battleship became North Carolina’s World War II Memorial. Brigadier General Ralph J. Rizzio, Jr., Commanding General, Marine Corps Installations East, will be the keynote speaker. There will be an all-service Color guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, a military band, taps, and a memorial wreath cast into the waters. The public is invited.

10:00 a.m.
The Sunset Beach Committee to Honor America’s Veterans and the town of Sunset Beach will hold a ceremony at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Beach Town Park with an honor guard and keynote address.

11:00 a.m. 
The Town of Burgaw will host an observance ceremony on the Courthouse Square by the brick monument and flags near the new clock at 11:00 a.m.

11:00 a.m.
The Veterans Administration will host a Memorial Day observance ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at Wilmington National Cemetery at 2011 Market Street.

4:00 p.m.
The Veterans of Foreign War VFW Post 12196 in conjunction with the Town of Belville will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Belville Riverwalk, 580 River Road at 4 :00 p.m.
