SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Multiple agencies helped rescue a person inside a car in the water in Southport Tuesday night.

The Southport Police Department said the person crashed their car into the water on the Southport waterfront around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Southport officers arrived to find the car in the war with the driver yelling for help. Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said two police officers were throwing life preservers, but the driver was out too far. Drew said Capt. Jonathan Bullard swam in his protective life jacket 400 yards to rescue the victim.

Drew said the man was rescued and put on a USCG vessel. He was then transported to Southport Marina to be evaluated and treated.

As of Wednesday morning, Southport police said the submerged vehicle has been located and will be retrieved soon. Southport Police Department has returned to the scene.

This is still an active scene. More details will be released when available.
