Multiple closed DMV locations to reopen

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Waiting at the DMV—it’s a necessary task that many people dread—but we wanted to find out why some locations in the Cape Fear have been seeing lines out the door.

Well, according to DMV Communications Manager Marty Homan, it’s because five of the seven offices in the area have closed in the last year.

According to Homan, three locations closed after each contractor retired with little notice, while the other two closed after the DMV discovered multiple contract violations.

But if you live in Wilmington, you’re in luck because Homan said the Wilmington DMV location on Kerr Avenue that recently closed will reopen next week.

“The other Wilmington office will be opening next week, and then Jacksonville and Shallotte at the end of May, Southport in August, and then Hampstead later in the summer, early fall,” he said.

Homan added that the most routine DMV business, like renewing your tags, can be done online to avoid waiting in line.
