Navassa fire kills several pets, injures two firefighters

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — The Red Cross is assisting a Brunswick County family displaced by a fire that started last night and continued to burn in the early morning hours.

According to Brunswick County Fire Marshal, Scott Garner, the fire was reported at 10:11 p.m. last night. Garner says when firefighters arrived at 116 North Navassa Road, the single family home was engulfed in flames.

Investigators say eight people were home when the blaze started. Garner says they were all able to escape unharmed, but several pets did die.

Brunswick County Emergency Services says the residents started smelling smoke coming from the garage area and when they opened the garage door, the fire spread into the living room.

Investigators say crews from the Navassa, Leland, Northwest, and Winnabow Fire Departments worked to put out the flames. They say two firefighters were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Crews could not determine a cause but do not suspect foul play.
