N.C. Forest Service issues statewide burn ban

NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — Due to an increase in fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service issued a statewide burn ban for all open burning until further notice.

As it is spring wildfire season, this is typical for this time of year as there is a lack of moisture.

The North Carolina Forest Services says 99% of their fires are caused by human activity.

Public information officer with N.C. Forest Services., Philip Jackson, urges the public not to burn.

“We need folks to adhere to this burn ban. Refer from burning until we see some significant rain to help curve our wildfire trends that we are seeing right now. And the public, they play a role there,” Jackson shared.

The National Weather Service has also issued a red flag warning for Saturday with low relative humidity and gusty winds fires that catch will spread quickly.

As a reminder, wildfires are no fly drone zones. It is illegal to fly a drone near, over, or around a wildfire. Jackson adds if there is a drone in the area then they cannot have planes in the area. The overall response will be interrupted with a drone nearby.
