N. Topsail dredging continues with minor extension
NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of North Topsail Beach will continue pumping sand on the beach until May 10, as it waits for another extension from the Army Corps of Engineers.
The project began Dec. 18 and was scheduled to be complete by April 30. Town manager Stuart Turille says because of weather delays, the town asked for an extension until May 30. The town has also had to remove large rocks that have unexpectedly been pumped onto the beach with the sand.
The town met twice to come up with alternative plans if it does not get that extension, but ultimately leaders decided to continue the original project while they wait for the extension.
Turille says for now the Army Corps of Engineers is giving the town until May 10, while the engineers decide about the full extension. At that point Turille says the Board of Aldermen will have to decide whether to invite Norfolk Dredging back in the fall to complete the project.
Turille says they will just continue the project as efficiently as possible until May 10, while they wait for further extension instead of using alternatives.
