National fraternity suspends its local UNCW chapter indefinitely
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A UNCW fraternity chapter has been indefinitely suspended effective immediately from its international fraternity.
In light of recent controversies nationally surrounding fraternities and sororities, leaders with the Delta Tau Delta fraternity have closed the doors on their UNCW chapter.
The chapter dates back more than thirty years on campus.
In a statement to media the fraternity’s executive director Jim Russell said:
“They were provided ample opportunities to change direction and align with the core values of Delta Tau Delta. This is not the outcome we had been working toward in the past several months.”
The release only detailing that:
“The national Fraternity took this action due to the chapter’s repeated violations of Delta (TOU) Tau Delta’s risk
management policy.”
The chapter is not alone though out of the 30 active greek organizations on campus five are currently on probation by the university.
It is still uncertain how the local Delta Tau Delta fraternity violated “risk management policy”.
The policy goes over a variety of things not to do from alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, and hazing.
WWAY attempted to reach out to the local chapter and have not heard back. We also requested some backstory from UNCW officials and they would not give us any information at the time nor comment on the suspension.
According to online reviews, of the local chapter it has had disciplinary problems with the school being put on probation in the past.
University policy says local fraternity chapter in no way can operate now on campus for any social, athletic, or business activity.
Below is the official release from the fraternity.
