Navigating change: Southport businesses respond to Highway 87 closures
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — As of earlier this week, Highway 87 has become the only route in and out of Southport, leading to significant traffic buildup. Local business owners are concerned about the impact this is having on their livelihoods.
While traffic on Highway 87 has been steady, getting in and out of Southport is taking longer than usual for visitors.
Once you arrive, you might not notice much difference—the businesses are open and ready to serve. However, small boutiques and some restaurants are feeling the effects of the road closures, resulting in a noticeable drop in foot traffic.
Pam Burnett, manager of Lexi B’s Boutique, shared her thoughts, noting that her usual 30-minute commute turned into an hour and a half yesterday. She understands why some customers are staying away but hopes the community will continue to support local businesses.
“If you don’t want to get stuck in traffic and come down, there are still ways you can continue to help the businesses, and the businesses can help you. You know we will stay open for as long as we can, continue our regular hours, and be patient if we have to close one day because traffic is extra heavy or if there’s an issue. We just have to be patient with one another.” Burnett explained.
Across the street at Café Koa, they too have felt a shift in foot traffic. Server Caleb King, a Southport local, expressed his confusion over the drop in business.
“There’s always that point in the year where the holiday marks the end of summer, and we usually slow down, but not this significant,” King remarked.
Although business has slowed down, it doesn’t mean there won’t be anyone around when you visit. If you have an hour or two to spare and want to shop or just say hello, these businesses will be happy to see you.
“We’d love to see the community out and about, supporting local restaurants and shops whenever you can,” said King.
As the community navigates these challenges, local business owners are hopeful for continued support and understanding from residents and visitors alike.
