NC Justice Edmunds to run for re-election in up-or-down vote

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – The only North Carolina Supreme Court justice whose seat is currently up for election next year has decided to take advantage of a new law that allows him to run without facing a conventional challenger.

Associate Justice Bob Edmunds filed paperwork with the State Board of Elections this week that says he wants to run in a retention election in November 2016. That means voters will cast up-or-down ballots on whether he should receive an additional eight-year term.

The General Assembly approved and Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law the retention election option for Supreme Court justices who’ve previously won a conventional head-to-head race. Edmunds had to decide on his own race by July 1.
