COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Nearly $4 million in grant money has been provided to the NCDOT for two projects looking to help strengthen transportation infrastructure ahead of future storms.

One grant is helping Highway 12 in the Outer Banks, with another $1.8 million grant improving an evacuation route to Charlotte.

The money will be used to reinforce the shoulder and embankments at the Lumber River crossing along US 74 between Boardman and Orrum.

The improvements are necessary to prevent flooding, roadway deterioration and damage that the bridge sustains when flooded after heavy storms, according to a press release.
