NCDOT shares an inside look at preparation before storms hit

CAPE FEAR REGION, NC (WWAY) — We’re just over a week into hurricane season and according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, crews in our area are ready for potential future storms.

The NCDOT said it has been making sure equipment is up to date and workers are briefed on proper protocols.

Jessi Leonard is the Assistant Division Maintenance Engineer for Division 3, which includes Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, and Sampson Counties. She said a lot of the work that goes into preparing for storms starts in the stock room, making sure there are enough tools available to warn drivers.

“We also make sure we have barricades and signs and are prepared in inventory to respond to water in the roadway,” Leonard said.

In North Carolina, the evacuation system is based on zones. You can find out your zone by entering your address into this interactive map.
