NCHSAA votes in favor of adding high school classifications

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – The NCHSAA voted unanimously Wednesday to make the change that will begin in the 2025 school year.

Currently, there are four classifications in North Carolina. Soon, there will be eight.

The NCHSAA uses ADM (Average daily membership) numbers to calculate their classifications from the previous year. With four new NCHSAA member schools, the association will have a round number of 440 schools across the state.

Here are how schools will be placed based on their current ADM.

8A) Ashley, Hoggard and Laney

7A) New Hanover, North Brunswick, and Topsail

6A) South Brunswick and West Brunswick

4A)

3A) Pender, South Columbus, Heide Trask, and Whiteville

2A) East Bladen and West Columbus

1A) East Columbus
