New chapter begins for New Hanover County Public Library with upcoming move
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Public Library is set to close its doors next month, after being in the building since 1981.
The library is moving to the new Grace District facility.
“I remember the first time I walked into the library being a child up until now and never a dull day,” Roy remembered.
The New Hanover County Public Library has stood at 3rd and Chestnut Streets for more than 4 decades.
Library associate Tawana Roy has worked there for more than 27 years.
“A lot of changes in the library building as far as the third floor being established, the basement not being used anymore for the book sale, the change of the curtains, and stuff like that…the flooring,” Roy said.
Roy admits she was never a fan of those orange curtains.
“Whoever was the work staff that came in at 9 o’clock, opened the curtains if the cleaning crew didn’t, all this dust and everything, just gross,” Roy recalled.
But for Roy, it’s the people who have made the job unforgettable.
“People that I’ve met over the years. I’ve seen a lot of people grow up, seen people get married, a lot of changes in the staff, seen their kids grow up. Met a lot of people here that’ve changed my life for the better,” Roy shared.
Now, she’s looking forward to the next chapter, moving the library into a new building on Grace Street.
“I can’t wait for it to open, it’s nice to see a new building, see the collection grow and change. I’ve seen books come here all my life, so it’ll be nice to see something different. See a new type of environment as far as the people that come in,” Roy said with excitement.
Her message to the community, keep showing up and bring your children.
“And just experience growth and it’s also about growing your mind, the library grows your mind in a positive way,” Roy encouraged.
The current building’s last day will be Sunday, August 3rd from one to five in the afternoon.
The opening date for the new library within the grace district has not been announced.
