New details in the investigation into Prince’s death

CHANHASSEN, MN (CNN) –  New details have been released in the investigation into Prince’s death. Investigators said they found a mislabeled bottle of pills in the singer’s compound.

The contents of a bottle labeled “hydrocodone” actually contained fentanyl pills. Fentanyl is the most powerful painkiller on the market and is only given in extreme circumstances for the severe pain.

Medical examiners found a lethal dose of fentanyl in Prince’s system upon the conclusion of the singer’s autopsy in June. It was not reported how he obtained the powerful pain killer and fentanyl generally does not come in pills, but in a patch or lollipops.

Investigators are wondering whether the drug manufacturer mislabeled the pills or if they were obtained illegally. Investigators are leaning towards the theory that Prince did not know the pills contained fentanyl.
