New Hanover County job fair held Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County hosted a job fair at the Government Center Saturday.

The county was looking for candidates for current and future vacancies for positions such as 911 center telecommunicators, human services universal caseworkers, and program assistants in community justice services.

A WWAY investigation showed that in fiscal year 2015, New Hanover County saw a 57-percent turnover rate for a 911 telecommunicator or dispatcher.

Chief Communications Officer Ruth Smith says this job fair has brought a lot of potential candidates for that position. Tours were given of the 911 center so they know what kind of environment they would be working in.

“We have had a great turn out for that position specifically,” Smith said. “I’ve seen about four or five tours of people going back there to see the 911 center so there is quite a bit of interest in that role. I think for the right person, it’s a great position.”

Human Resources staff were there to answer questions about positions and people were able to complete applications on site.

Smith says they hope to get the positions fill soon, but it could take a few weeks until that is possible.
