New Hanover County Special Olympics holds Fall Games
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tons of folks in the Cape Fear are celebrating after having some big fun at the Special Olympics Fall Games on Wednesday.
The games are for individuals with intellectual disabilities from ages 8 to senior citizens.
The Fall Games were held at Legion Stadium and consisted of kick ball, soccer, bocce ball, and carnival games.
New Hanover County Special Olympics Coordinator Tiffany Lesley said Special Olympics is not just a one day event. There are activities happening weekly and monthly all year round.
The two biggest Special Olympics events of the year are the Spring and Fall Games.
“This is a way for them to have a field trip and a fun day for them to get out and have fun with their friends and get to experience that competition level that they may have been missing out on,” Lesley said.
Events are free for athletes. It takes about $45,000 to $50,000 every year to put on Special Olympic activities in New Hanover County.
Lesley said Special Olympics are always looking for volunteers to help out with events.
