New Hanover County warning residents of scam emails

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County says they are aware of fake emails impersonating Planning and Land Use staff. The emails request wire transfer payments for development application fees.
The county says these emails are a scam. Residents are asked not to respond nor send payment.
Scam emails like this one may appear to come from county staff or board members but they’re using fake addresses like PlanningNewHanoverCountyNC@usa.com. They may also reference real properties and applicant names. Lastly, they’ll request wire transfer payment for application review and approval fees.
If you get an email like this one, do not click on any links or reply.
The county reminds residents that they do not request payment via wire transfer. All payments are processed through official county systems.
