New NC learner’s permit requirement takes effect New Year’s Day

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — For those looking to get behind the wheel for the first time in North Carolina, a big change is coming to that process on Monday.
Starting Jan. 1, 2024, drivers with a learner’s permit will need to have nine months behind the wheel before getting a license.
When the North Carolina Graduated Driver’s License Law was adopted in 1997, the original behind-the-wheel time needed for a permitted driver was 12 months.
