NHCS offering girls’ flag football for first time ever

All four Wilmington-area high schools will have a team

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – All four Wilmington-area high schools will have a girls’ flag football team this spring.

It’s the first school district in the eastern half of the state to add the sport. Some in the west, like Charlotte, have already added it. Flag football has been added as a sport in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles as well.

The season will start mid-March, according to NHCS Athletic Director Kelly Lewis.

The Charlotte Panthers are sponsoring the initiative, and are providing equipment, uniforms, and a stipend for a head coach.

Girls who are interested in participating should contact their school’s athletic director.
