North Carolina crematory suspended after remains found

KING, NC (AP) – North Carolina regulators have suspended a crematory’s license after human remains were found at an employee’s home earlier this year.

Local media report the North Carolina Board of Funeral Services issued the suspension against Cremation Services Inc. of Winston-Salem after an employee who lives in the town of King was found with 93 sets of remains.

The remains were discovered in early February when a neighbor noticed a bone fragment and ashes near a trash can.

Susanne Blair of Cremation Services says the employee had permission to take the remains of the unclaimed bodies since his home was on the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains, where he planned to spread the ashes.

Stokes County prosecutors say no law was broken.

A hearing on the suspension is May 10.
