Novant Health cuts ribbon on second Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic

The new medical facility will work to serve uninsured and underinsured patients

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Novant Health cut the ribbon on the new Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic Thursday. The clinic will provide primary care services to uninsured and underinsured patients.

The new facility is located on Princess Place Dr. across from the Creekwood South community. The 7,300 square foot facility boasts 12 exams rooms and will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

It’s the second of two such clinics—joining the first location on Greenfield St. that opened in May.

The clinics provide services like health screenings and preventative care with no insurance required. The project was made possible by a $10 million donation from Jordan and two land donations from New Hanover County.

Dr. Shelby Stoneking will be one of the providers at the new clinic. She said the project a testament to the importance of access to underserved communities.

“First and foremost, it’s a recognition that people are people and they have basic rights; and one of those rights is access to healthcare,” Stoneking said. “And so trying to remove some of those barriers by actually putting clinics where they can access them.”

Jordan himself was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict—instead sharing a written message that was read aloud to the audience.

“I have no doubt that this new clinic will be meaningful for the people here in Wilmington,” Jordan wrote. “Just be careful with those giant scissors. The clinic hasn’t started seeing patients yet.”

For staff like Stoneking, they’re ready to get to get to work in the new building.

“We were actually operating the mobile clinic across the street here so that people could get used to the idea that we’re going to be here and be there for them. I’ve seen it in stages, but it’s beautiful and it’s really exciting,” Stoneking said.

Construction started on the building in March of 2023.

The clinic is already accepting appointments and will open to patients starting Wednesday.
