Oak Island crews respond to multiple lightning fires from midweek storms

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Oak Island Fire Department was busy this week with fires caused by lightning strikes.
Crews were dispatched Wednesday at 9:12 p.m. to a call regarding a lightning strike at a home on NE 4th Street in Oak Island. This home sustained some property damage, which did not result in a fire.
While responding, crews were dispatched to a second call of a lightning strike at 9:14 p.m., this time resulting in an active structure fire at 302 W Yacht Drive. The responding engine diverted to W Yacht Drive, while the secondary unit remained to finish the response at NE 4th Street.
Crews arrived to find the structure approximately 75 percent involved in fire. Crews began an aggressive response, deploying additional engines and both ladder units, and were able to fully contain the fire within 45 minutes. The home at 302 W Yacht Drive is a total loss, but had no occupants inside at the time of the fire. No surrounding structures were significantly damaged.
As this fire was being contained crews were dispatched to a third call regarding a lightning strike. As with the first call, this home sustained some minor damage, but did not result in a fire. All calls were within a 7-block radius of one another.
