OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Oak Island Police Department recently allowed a juvenile a chance to fix their mistakes instead of being charged.

The Department was alerted to graffiti on a new bench at the Davis Canal Pedestrian Walkover on March 29th.

Officers were quickly able to identify the person responsible for the crime. But they chose a different solution instead of charging the juvenile.

“Rather than bring charges against this person, and place a negative mark on their future, we chose to offer the option of restitution. This would allow the individual an opportunity to correct their mistakes, and quite literally, repay their debt to the community,” a statement read.

The juvenile attempted to remove the paint by sanding, but when that didn’t work they decided to buy new boards to replace the bench.

But an anonymous person replaced the impacted boards before the work could be done.
