Panthers fire Reich in first year as head coach

Team has fired coaches in season back to back years

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – The Carolina Panthers have made a coaching change again.

Following the team’s 17-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, which seemed to be the final straw on the camel’s back for team owner David Tepper, the Panthers posted this statement on X:

“I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well. Effective immediately, Special Teams coordinator Chris Tabor will serve as our interim head coach. Senior Assistant Jim Caldwell will be a special advisor to Offensive Coordinator Thomas Brown, who will take over play calling duties.”

The team is a league worst 1-10 and does not own the rights to what will likely become the #1 overall draft pick, because that trade was included in the package to acquire the draft pick that became QB Bryce Young.

Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor is the interim head coach.

The Panthers have been one of the worst in the NFL in many offensive categories: 15.7 points a game (29th), 4.1 yards per play (tied for last), and have a 37.2 conversion percentage on third down (20th).

Last year, the team fired Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start. Since Tepper bought the team, the team has had six head coaches: Ron Rivera, Perry Fewell, Matt Rhule, Steve Wilks, Frank Reich, and now Chris Tabor, with a potential seventh soon.
