Pender County proposes enhanced Fire Protection Services in Penderlea and Shiloh-Columbia

PENDER COUNTY, N.C. (WWAY) — Pender County aims to establish a county service district, effectively bolstering emergency response capabilities in the Penderlea and Shiloh-Columbia areas.

In 2023, Pender County filed a lawsuit against Shiloh-Columbia Fire Department, citing ‘deficiencies in performance.’

The new proposal, put forth by the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office, seeks to address key concerns and elevate fire protection services available to property owners in the designated areas. By creating a county service district encompassing Penderlea and Shiloh-Columbia, the initiative is anticipated to yield several significant benefits for residents and property owners alike.

Among the anticipated improvements highlighted by the Fire Marshal’s Office are:

  • Reduced Response Times: Prompt and efficient responses to fires and emergencies, ensuring timely assistance when needed most.
  • Enhanced Fire Suppression: Implementation of advanced strategies and resources to effectively combat fires, minimizing damage and safeguarding lives and property.
  • Heightened Safety Measures: Comprehensive measures aimed at enhancing overall safety, offering increased peace of mind to residents.
  • Lower Insurance Rates: Potential for reduced property insurance rates as a result of improved fire protection services.
  • No Tax Increase: Assurance that the proposed enhancements will not increase property owners’ taxes.

“Strengthening fire protection services is crucial for the safety and well-being of our community, ” says Pender County Fire Marshal Amy Burton. “The proposed improvements aim to provide residents with quicker response times and more effective measures during emergencies, without additional financial burden.

A map outlining the proposed county service district is available for review alongside the notice of a public hearing, allowing residents to familiarize themselves with the proposed changes and provide feedback. Additionally, a detailed report prepared by the Fire Marshal’s Office is accessible for review at the County Manager’s office.
