Pender County Schools closed to students until at least mid-October

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Schools in Pender County will remain closed to students until the middle of the month.

In a news release, Superintendent Steven Hill announced “The best projected return dates begin October 18 with a window extending to October 22, based on environmental hygienist and contractor reports.”

The district says these projected dates may change based on approval of funding and/or unforeseen obstacles in structural repairs. Hill said potential impact of Hurricane Michael, which could still be a tropical storm when it reaches our area, may add damage and delay progress further.

The fund balance for Pender County Schools is depleted, as is the additional $4 million recently allotted by county commissioners. By law, school systems cannot enter into repair contracts without possessing the funds to cover the contract. Pender County Schools says it cannot complete repair work without more money. The school district says it is engaged in local, state and federal government discussions to try and overcome this situation.

Gov. Roy Cooper announced Monday he has directed $25 million from the NC Education Lottery go to speed up the recovery and reopening of schools.

“It has been stated by many that this is a storm like no other and has affected Pender County like no other. This is especially true for your school system,” Hill said. “I would be remiss if I didn’t share what a recent colleague stated that lost everything, ‘Maybe this will help people remember what is really important in life.'”

Sixty-four school staff members are displaced themselves. PCS staff members are also supporting almost 600 students who have been displaced and are preparing some to return long distances for the first day back according to school officials.

“I will be updating you every 48 hours to ensure you are actively involved in supporting your school system’s recovery,” Hill said.
