SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Pieces of a shipwreck from more than 100 years ago appeared in Surf City recently.

The William H. Sumner was a 165-foot, three-masted schooner bringing phosphate, mahogany and ironwood from Puerto Rico to New York when it ran aground on September 7, 1919 on a sandbar off Topsail Inlet.

The ship is normally only seen a few times a year, but was uncovered by recent storms.

As a reminder, shipwrecks are protected by the state. Removing or damaging remains is a violation of state law.
