Man indicted in killing of his caregiver with a guitar

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a North Carolina man on a first-degree murder charge after police say he told officers he killed his 72-year-old caregiver with a guitar.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that a Forsyth County grand jury indicted 60-year-old David D. Thomas on first-degree murder charges Monday in the death of 72-year-old Ruby D. Johnson.

Officers went to Johnson’s house June 18 and Thomas told police that he hit Johnson with a guitar. Officers found Johnson’s body inside her home.

Johnson was appointed in 2006 to be Thomas’ guardian after Thomas was declared incompetent. In May, Thomas filed a petition to have Johnson removed as his guardian, although it wasn’t clear why.

Online records do not say whether Thomas has an attorney.
