SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A section of N.C. 211 in Brunswick County is set to reopen ahead of schedule following storm damage that occurred last month, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The bridge over the canal just north of Southport, which was closed on Sept. 16 due to heavy rainfall and extensive damage, will be open to traffic by mid-morning on Oct. 10.

The NCDOT and its contractor constructed a detour onto a new bridge during the closure.

When the road reopens, drivers will use the new alignment and bridge before returning to the main roadway. Barricades, signs, and pavement markings will be in place to guide motorists through the updated traffic pattern.

However, the N.C. 211 bridge over Dutchman Creek, which was also severely damaged during the storm, will remain closed. Drivers are being rerouted to Dosher Cutoff SE and N.C. 87. NCDOT crews are working to have this section reopened by the end of October.

Both sections impacted by the storm are part of an ongoing project to widen N.C. 211.
