Preparing your heating system for chilly nights ahead

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the weather starts to cool down, many will be firing up your heating systems for the first time this season. To make sure your HVAC unit is ready for the colder months ahead, there are a few simple steps you can take.

Routine Maintenance:

Routine maintenance, performed twice a year, is crucial for keeping your heating system running smoothly through seasonal temperature shifts. It can also improve your HVAC’s performance and help you avoid costly emergency repairs.

For Newer Units

If you have a newer system, it likely requires minimal maintenance. However, a quick tune-up can extend the life of your equipment and ensure it runs at peak efficiency.

Justin Fulford, owner of Fulford Heating and Cooling, shares his general rules of thumb for maintaining your heating system: “Overall, with general conditioning, make sure the electrical components, the refrigerant system, everything is up and running efficiently. It’s very important for a heat pump or gas pump system. You don’t want to run your temperatures too high because that could increase your electric bill. When adjusting the thermostat, try not to move it more than two degrees at a time. Otherwise, you could trigger the heating strips or heating elements, which use more electricity.”

Keep an Eye on Your Energy Bills

Fulford also warns that a sudden spike in your power bill could signal an issue with your HVAC system, such as a leak. If you notice this, it’s a good idea to call a professional technician to inspect your system.

By staying on top of regular maintenance and keeping an eye on your energy usage, you can help ensure your heating system runs efficiently all winter long.
