Public invited to shape vision for Optimism Oasis in Wilmington’s Northside

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Optimism Oasis, a proposed 20-acre athletic and cultural hub for Wilmington’s historic Northside, will be introduced to the public on Monday.
A public input session will take place Dec. 2 at The Sportsmen’s Club, 1111 Castle Street, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The initiative, aimed at serving Northside residents and the broader Wilmington community, is designed to provide world-class sports and wellness facilities. The Oasis would also host regional tournaments in basketball, volleyball, swimming, and track.
Planned amenities include a track and field complex, a gym and swim center with Olympic and 25-meter pools, a water park, an amphitheater, a skateboard park, a maker space, and a health and wellness hotel for visiting athletes.
“We invite community leaders and residents to this initial public meeting to explore the vision and provide invaluable input on this transformative project,” Optimism Oasis Board Chair Dr. Philip Brown said. “Optimism Oasis will be designed to create opportunities, nurture personal growth, and support mental and physical health equity for all members of our community. By adding state-of-the-art athletic facilities, educational programs, and cultural enrichment to Wilmington’s historic Northside, the Oasis will be a cornerstone of unity and empowerment for generations to come.”
The public meeting will include a presentation outlining the project’s goals, including its focus on Opportunity, Nurturing, and Equity (ONE). Architect Zena Howard of Perkins & Will will share the facility’s design features and community benefits.
Attendees will have the chance to share their thoughts during a facilitated discussion on how Optimism Oasis can best meet Wilmington’s needs.
