REAL ID: New NC ID requirements take effect October 2020

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Even if your license is not expired you may want to consider taking a trip to the DMV. The new ID requirements in North Carolina are approaching quickly.

The real ID is a federal requirement and will be in effect starting October 2020.

It is an increase in security measures and will be necessary to have to get through TSA security.

NC Board of Transportation member Daniel McCombs went to get his new real ID Wednesday morning and says the sooner the better.

So far more than 10,000 real ID’s have been issued in New Hanover County.

“They should be prepared because at the very end there’s going to be a huge line,” Daniel McComas, NC State Transportation Board, said. “There’s going to be back log, there’s going to be a lot of delay so the goal is to try to get as many people registered with the real ID before the deadline.”

The real ID has a gold star and is clearly noted “not for federal identification.”

In order to get the new ID you must bring a document with your full name and date of birth, social security number and two documents with current NC address. If your name has been changed you must also bring one document showing proof.

TSA states if you have a valid passport you can still travel using that form of ID.
