Registration open for tennis tournament in New Hanover County to combat domestic violence

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Registration is now open for the 4th ‘Raise A Racquet Against Domestic Violence’ charity tennis tournament.
This event is held annually in memory of MaryAnn Breault, who died Dec. 7, 2021 in a domestic violence-related murder-suicide.
Organized by the victim’s daughter, Rachel Knowles, and the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association (GWTA) — the tournament will take place February 28 through March 2 at The Althea Gibson Tennis Complex in Empie Park (3405 Park Ave, Wilmington NC 28403).
All proceeds will benefit Wilmington’s Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. (DVSS). To date, nearly $60,000 has been raised in MaryAnn’s memory from this event.
Players will compete in co-ed teams. Teams can include youth players aged 14+ with parent permission. Registration is $50 per player. The deadline to register is February 22.
“The Impact Team Tennis format has been a huge hit,” says Candy Pegram, Community Coordinator of GWTA. “It’s a perfect example of men and women uniting for a meaningful cause, showing us that we’re always stronger when we work together to support our community.”
This year’s tournament is made possible with the support of generous sponsors like UDT, Stifel, and O’Brien Service Company. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple and bring cash and in-kind donations—like hygiene & toiletries, canned food, diapers, gift cards—to on-site DVSS representatives.
“We’re thrilled to be back for a fourth year,” says Lauren Daley Bryant, Executive Director of DVSS. “‘Raise A Racquet’ and MaryAnn’s story have ignited meaningful conversations about domestic violence, increasing awareness and helping us connect with those who need our support.”
In 2024, DVSS assisted 1,181 people, a majority from New Hanover County. Services ranged from shelter and material support to crisis calls and court accompaniment.
“I carry my mom’s memory with me every day,” says Knowles. “‘Raise A Racquet’ has grown into a powerful movement that’s changing lives. I’m grateful that out of my family’s tragedy, we’ve created something meaningful for the community, and I know my mom would be incredibly proud of the impact of her story.”
