Report says N.C. doesn’t need zip line regulations after deadly fall

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A state agency says North Carolina doesn’t need to add new regulations to zip lines.

The Department of Labor was asked to write the report after a 12-year-old camper from Wilmington died in a fall this summer in the Blue Ridge Mountains as she rode on the lines, where harnessed riders slide on pulleys.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the state Labor Department in a report requested by lawmakers after the girl’s death that most zip lines deaths are caused by human error.

The report says zip lines are more like sports with active participants rather than amusement park rides, where participation is more passive.

The Labor Department says no amount of regulation can remove all risk from riding a zip line.
