Rescue hopes to continue to supply aid
CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — It’s been 2 months since Hurricane Florence struck the Carolinas but, 800 residents in Pender County are still displaced. Some are without homes, basic needs and animal supplies.
Six weeks ago, the Eastern NC Emergency Equine Assistance organization opened a distribution center at 4101 Blue Clay Road in Castle Hayne to give away animal food to families in need.
Coordinator Jennifer Witkowski says she hopes to keep these doors open until January but, it has been difficult to get volunteers. Her goal is to prevent pets from being surrendered to animal control.
“I think the biggest thing is people in Wilmington have gone back to normal life and they don’t realize there is still such a need,” said Witkowski. “I’m getting approximately 35 emails every day of people reaching out for animal assistance, hay for livestock, goats cows, everything.”
The donation center will be open again on November 25th from 11 am to 3 pm.
Witkowski says they are running low on livestock hay.
