Residents worried about upcoming railroad crossing closure

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — According to a news release from Southern Commercial Development, the railroad crossing at Magnolia Drive and Old Mill Road will be closed Wednesday in Navassa. The company said it will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but the sign at the road said 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. One resident, Keonna Graham, said she has multiple concerns, because this is the only way in and out of her neighborhood.

“The buses. The kids getting on the buses and my little sister goes to Roger Bacon Academy,” Graham said. “We leave here about 7:20 a.m. We wouldn’t be able to get out. I wish maybe they could have done it at night, because a lot of people live back here and going in and out it will stop a lot of traffic.”

A spokeswoman says drivers need to park their cars on the other side of the railroad tracks tomorrow night if they are worried about getting blocked in.

Another crossing closure is planned in the area week as well, at the Glycotech Inc. crossing.
