Road closures begin in Southport for NC 4th of July Festival, free trolley available

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — There are several road closures happening today in Southport to prepare for the North Carolina Fourth of July festival.

There will be road closures happening in Southport throughout the week, but there will also be a free trolley available starting Tuesday.

According to the Southport Police Department, Bay street is closed from S Atlantic Avenue to Davis Street. Davis Street is closed at Moore Street. This is so the arts & crafts vendors can set up. This area will remain closed throughout the festival.

Happening tonight at 6, S Howe Street will close and remain closed throughout the festival. This is where the tented food vendors will be set up.

To ensure a smooth and safe parade procession, The NC 4th of July Festival Committee said it is also necessary to temporarily restrict parking on certain streets that are part of the parade route and staging area.

The affected streets where parallel parking will not be permitted from 7 a.m. onwards on July 4 include:

  • N. Atlantic Street
  • S. Atlantic Street
  • N. Rhett Street
  • S. Rhett Street
  • Kingsley Street
  • Bay Street (from Atlantic Street to Kingsley Street)
  • Moore Street (from Atlantic Street East to Willis Street)

Additionally, please note the following new street closures:

  • E. Nash Street will be closed for a period of time on Saturday, June 29th, to host the Firefighters Competition.
  • South Howe Street will close beginning at 5 pm on Monday, July 1st, to accommodate food vendor setup, and will remain closed through July 4th.
  • S. Davis and Bay Street will close starting at 6 am on July 1 to accommodate Arts & Crafts vendor set up and will remain closed through July 4th.

The restriction on parallel parking and the additional street closures are essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of the parade operations and other festival activities, as well as to minimize any inconvenience to the participants and attendees.

According to the NC 4th of July Festival Committee, a trolley service will be available July 2-4. The trolley will run from Southport Elementary to the downtown area and will be free to use from 10 am until 10 pm.
