SC lawmaker wants mandatory active shooter drill in schools
(WLTX) — A South Carolina state representative is proposing having mandatory active shooter drills in all public schools.
Rep. Marvin Pendarvis says he plans to file a bill that would require the state education department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to come up with training materials. It would also require training for teachers.
The Charleston Democrat calls what he’s doing a proactive measure in the wake of the recent school shootingS in the nation.
“Public safety isn’t just about responding to incidents, but also about changing the environment in which they happened,” Pendarvis said in a statement. “We are a first world nation, our children should never have to go to school in fear.”
Pendarvis is in his first term in the legislature, winning his seat last November.
Two other bills are also making their way through the State House around school security as well.
The first is called the Jacob Hall School Protection Act named for students killed in the Townville Elementary School shooting in 2016. This bill would allow public school employees and district offices to hold a public concealed weapons permits.
The second bill would require metal detectors in entrances of every school starting in the 2018-2019 school year.
