SCC tops new transportation technology building with signed steel beam

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — On Tuesday, state representatives, trustees, college leadership, construction representatives, and instructors signed the final steel beam for the Transportation Technology/STEM building.
“What an awesome way to commemorate this occasion with signing the final steel beam that will, in our eyes, last forever,” said Dr. Chris English, SCC President. “I want to thank Rep. Brenden Jones and Sen. Bill Rabon for their support in helping this community. This is your building, and you’ve invested in this and Columbus County.”
The $22 million, 21,000 square-foot facility is designed to house Automotive Systems Technology, Diesel Training, and Truck Driver Training programs.
The building is designed to create an immersive, real-world learning environment that mirrors today’s industry standards and support long-term program growth.
After the signing was complete, the steel beam was taken closer to the building and attached to a crane that lifted it up and placed it on the structured frame of the building. With construction expected to be completed in October, spring 2027 semester classes will begin in the new building.
