Seahawk Invitational off and running at UNCW
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Senior Caleb Mathis and junior Courtney Cefalo of UNCW each won Long Jump titles to highlight opening day action in the Wendy’s Seahawk Invitational on Friday at the Harold Greene Track & Field Complex.
The student-athletes from 17 schools conclude the meet with 18 events on Saturday, beginning with the Shot Put and Discus at 10 a.m. The running events, including the third annual “Fastest Kid In New Hanover County” competition, start at 11 a.m.
Mathis, from Mocksville, N.C., topped the 19-man field in the Long Jump by leaping 22-10.75 in his outdoor debut. Morehouse’s Jovan Rembert came in second at 21-11.50.
Cefalo, who won silver in the event at the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association championships, picked up where she left off, beating out 15 other jumpers with a leap of 18-09.50. Zhane Washington of Morgan State came in second at 18-04.50.
In other top-3 finishes for the Seahawks, senior Ramira Mayse raced to third in the 100 Meter Prelims with a time of 15.29 and sophomore E.J. Green came in second in the 110 Meter Hurdle Prelims by clocking a 14.61.
“We had champions in both long jumps with great jumps for both of them,” said Layne Schwier, UNCW’s head track and field coach. “We qualified several back in the hurdles and sprints, which was our goal. Now we have to back it up tomorrow in the finals.”
