Seahawks Baseball swept by Wofford in double-header
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Wofford on Friday at Brooks Field by the scores of 13-1 and 5-4.
The Terriers improved to 22-10 with the sweep while the Seahawks, losers of their last three, fell to 19-11.
Wofford’s Adam Scott (5-2) was backed by a 12-hit offense in the opener while scattering three hits, walking one and striking out seven. Reed Massey led the Terriers with three hits while Mack Nathanson drove in three runs on two hits and scored three runs. Brett Rodriguez finished with two hits, scored three runs and stole two bases in the opened.
The Terriers finished off the sweep behind another strong performance on the hill from Austin Higginbotham (3-2). The lefthander allowed four runs, two earned, over 8 1/3 innings before making way for Anthony Garcia, who posted his fourth save of the season.
UNCW’s Alex Royalty (3-3) took the loss in the opener, allowing six runs and walking four over five innings. In the nightcap, Justin Walke (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering the lead in the fifth inning. Walke allowed two runs on three hits as Wofford broke a 3-all deadlock.
No Seahawk managed a multi-hit game on the afternoon.
Up next: The Seahawks and Terriers conclude their series on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start. There will not be a game played on Saturday.
How it happened: Game 1 – Wofford jumped on Royalty for three in the second and two more in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
Game 2 – Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fourth, Wofford tied the game on two-out single to centerfield. The Terriers struck again in the fifth with two runs off Walke. RBI singles from McClain Bradley broke the tie and Andrew Orzel added what would be a needed insurance run with a two-out triple.
Notes: Mason Berne had hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 11 games … His on base streak also moved to 24 consecutive games … He drove in his 17th two-out RBI in the first inning of game 1 … Walke’s loss in the nightcap was just the second for the Seahawk bullpen … UNCW has split a pair of doubleheaders this season, sweeping Hofstra before falling twice on Friday.
