Seahawks eye CAA Tennis Championships

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – The pairings are set for the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships and UNCW’s teams will both be playing at the same time on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Eight schools will be competing for the men’s title and nine teams are vying for the women’s crown from April 19-22 at Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center. UNCW won the men’s championship last spring and William & Mary claimed the women’s title.

UNCW’s men are the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 Charleston on Friday, April 21, at 1 p.m. Coach Mait DuBois and his club, 16-4 this season, have won five of the last nine and three of the last five conference championships.

The men’s championship gets under way early Friday with four quarterfinals. At 9 a.m., top-seeded William & Mary takes on #8 Delaware and #4 James Madison goes up against #5 Drexel.  At 1 p.m., #2 Elon meets #7 Hofstra and #3 UNCW faces #6 Charleston.

The winners will advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinals. The CAA men’s championship match is set for 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Seahawk women, 1-11, landed the No. 7 seed and are scheduled to face No. 2 James Madison. UNCW is looking for its second CAA title after capturing the championship in 2014 behind Most Outstanding Performer Angie Sekely.

The women’s bracket starts on Thursday morning when #8 Towson faces #9 Hofstra in a first-round match at 10 a.m. Friday’s quarterfinals will take place at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C. At 9 a.m., top-seeded William & Mary meets the Towson/Hofstra winner and #4 Elon takes on #5 Drexel. Those matches will be followed at 1 p.m. by #2 James Madison squaring off against #7 UNCW and #3 Delaware battling #6 Charleston.

The winners advance to Saturday’s 2 p.m. semifinal contests. The women’s championship match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
