Seahawks power past Pirates 83-62

UNCW men's basketball has won 6 of their last 7 since an OT loss to begin conference play

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Three games this week for UNCW men’s basketball resulted in three wins.

Five UNCW players reached double figures and the Seahawks shot 50 percent or better for the third straight game. The Seahawks  have won 13 of their last 16 contests to stand 16-5 and 6-2 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Pirates dipped to 10-11 and 3-6 in the league.

UNCW shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field, the highest mark vs. a Division I school this season, and a season-high 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from three-point range.

Khamari McGriff’s 19 points was a game-high followed by Harlan Obioha with 14 points. Noah Ross added 12 with Donovan Newby providing 11. Greedy Williams delivered 10 along with a season-high seven assists to complete the quintet.

Hampton’s Noah Farrakhan scored 15 points for the Pirates, who shot 41.7 percent from the field. Daniel Johnson chipped in 10 points.

With the game tied 15-all, UNCW raced out a double-digit lead it would not surrender with a 13-2 run to make it 28-17 with 5:44 to go before halftime and carried a 39-28 lead into the intermission.

The Seahawks pushed their lead to a game-high 17 points with 8:24 left which was followed by seven unanswered Pirate points to make it 67-57 with 6:10 to go. The UNCW defense forced misses on 10 of Hampton’s last 11 attempts to seal the win.

UNCW next travels to play at North Carolina A&T on Thursday at 7 p.m.
