UNCW head basketball coach Kevin Keatts said last year's UNCW team would have found a way to lose Wednesday's home game against the Liberty Flames. As it turns out, UNCW won a sloppy, physical game in overtime to improve to 4-3 on the season. The game was highlighted by a handful of dunks. Most basketball fans expected 4th ranked Louisville to pounce on UNCW. Louisville did win on Sunday night, but the game proved to be much closer than expected. In fact UNCW pulled within two points of the Cardinals late in the second half, yet Rick Pitino's club pulled away at the end to win by double digits. Vertex Rail Technologies hosted an open house and job fair event at it's new facility Saturday off Raleigh Street.
There was information about the new facility and the rail cars to be manufactured on display.
Job Fairs spark new life in the unemployment world.
Governor Pat McCrory announced this afternoon that Vertex Rail will be adding 1,300 new jobs at the former Terex Crane facility located on Raleigh Street in Wilmington. The company will manufacture rail tank cars which are in high demand to transport crude oil from North Dakota, Texas and other energy-producing states.
The first round of the soccer playoffs concluded on Wednesday night all around the state. The majority of our local squads won. Winners advance to the second round of the state playoffs later this week. Plus, we checked in with former UNCW Seahawk basketball standout Adam Smith on Wednesday. Smith now plays basketball at Virginia Tech.
One area high school team won a state title on Saturday. Several other high school squads had their state title dreams crushed. Congratulations to the Wilmington Christian Acadeny volleyball squad for back to back state titles in volleyball. The Landfall Tradition is over. Wake Forest won with a record setting performance. UNCW won their home regular season finale on Saturday in men's soccer. The Seahawks are back in first place in the CAA. Plus more!
UNCW was the place to be on Wednesday for Seahawk sports. The nationally ranked men's soccer team won once again. The women's basketball team at UNCW held their annual media day. We were there for both.
WWAY's 5th Quarter from the first Friday in October is complete, as is week 7 of the high school football season. We featured Hoggard's win over New Hanover, along with victories from Laney, Topsail, Whiteville, East Bladen and Wallace-Rose Hill.
Media Day, one of the long traditions in college basketball, took place on Wednesday for Kevin Keatts and the 2014-15 UNCW Seahawks. We were there in order to check out this year's team. Former South Columbus football standout Ethan Farmer says the UNC Tar Heel defense will continue to make progress. Keith Rendleman is one of the best basketball players to ever suit up for UNCW. One day his jersey may hang high in the rafters at Trask Coliseum. Rendleman had a knack for slam dunks and rebounds and he's taking his talents to ???.
Jacob VanCompernolle scored twice to lift UNCW past Duke on Tuesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Coastal Christian looked impressive on Tuesday too. In fact the Centurions are now ranked third in the state in the private school rankings.
This weekend hundreds of artist from around the state are showing off their work and helping raise money for the art community. The art sampler event is underway now!
Former South Columbus football standout Ethan Farmer is trying to make the most out of his senior season for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Farmer and the Tar Heels are currently undefeated. Several local high school football teams decided to play on Thursday in order to avoid the chance of playing in wet conditions on Friday. The weather forecast on Friday is scattered storms around the region. Regardless, we had our cameras out and about on Thursday.

A man is jail and scheduled to make his first court appearance today after Wilmington Police say they caught him trying to steal from a college construction site last night.
