Baseball standouts Sam Foy, Steven Linkous, and Hunter Smith will be returning to the Wilmington Sharks for the summer of 2015. Foy is a New Hanover grad, Linkous(UNCW) is a North Brunswick grad, while Smith is a Whiteville graduate.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. It's that village, or in this case the Cape Fear community, Wilmington's mayor says needs to step up to stop the gang violence.
The West Brunswick Trojans sit on top of the Mideastern Conference with a 3-0 league mark and an overall record of 10-0. We checked in with the Trojans on Thursday. West Brunswick beat arch rival South Brunswick by 15 points. We also checked out college action involving Brunswick Community College.
First round playoff action is over for high school football. Despite the cold weather we had our camera crews in playoff mode on Friday night in order to cover the local teams that have football state championship aspirations.
Hoggard, Pender, South Columbus and Wilmington Christian all won state playoff volleyball games on Thursday night. Odds are we'll have at least one state champion from the area this year. On Thursday New Hanover won the boys soccer crown for the Mideastern Conference. We were there for that too. Plus, the Landfall Tradition tees off on Friday. Prior to the event we caught up with UNCW Seahawk golfer Kayla Thompson. The UNCW freshman is a graduate of West Bladen High.
A report on academic misconduct in regard to athletics at the University of North Carolina will be released on Wednesday. Freddie Jackson stole the show at UNCW's Midnite Madness. We showed his creative slam dunk on our sports on Monday night. Plus we showcased NCHSAA Hall of Fame Day from Chapel Hill where the late Joe Miller and Jack Holley were honored.
We had quite an evening of high school football on WWAY's 5th Quarter. We showcased New Hanover's victory over Laney. We featured East Bladen senior Farrell Murchison. He broke the career rushing record for East Bladen Friday. Whiteville's Terrin Manning had 15 carries, 5 touchdowns and 330 yards on Friday. Plus more!

The high school state playoffs start tonight for high school baseball and softball. Soccer playoffs start later this week for most teams. The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame as of Sunday has four more members. That makes a grand total of 40. The new class includes the late Bob Boyd, Ricky Benton, Calvin Lane and Alge Crumpler.
Former NFL tight end Alge Crumpler will be returning to Wilmington this weekend. The New Hanover High graduate heads this year's induction class for the 2014 Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. On Wednesday we addressed the home scoring drought for the Wilmington Hammerheads. On Wednesday the NCHSSA adopted new guidelines concerning the mercy rule for high school football and basketball. T.J. Warren, Leslie McDonald and Andre Dawkins had more than their fair share of impressive basketball plays in Burgaw on Thursday night. It was Warren's first professional game since declaring himself eligible for the NBA Draft. We had high school baseball action on Thursday. The North Brunswick Scorpions made it all the way to the 2-A state finals last year in baseball. Most of last year's players are back for North Brunswick. On Sunday, May 4, the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame will welcome the 2014 inductees into membership at their annual banquet at the Burney Center on the campus of UNCW. The Reception and Silent Auction will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the induction ceremony and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The annual golf tournament will be held Saturday, May 3.
