On Sunday the Carolina Panthers looked like a playoff team. Unfortunately the playoffs aren't a possibility for Carolina, but the guys in black, silver and blue won consecutive games for the first time since last December. The UNCW men's basketball team on Saturday lost on the road against the Davidson Wildcats. Check out our game action from Sunday's 6pm newscast.
Veteran girls basketball coach Karlyn Stephens has resigned from East Columbus High School in order to accept a job at Southeastern Community College. Stephens will coach the softball team at SECC. She'll also be a physical education instructor. Monday was a light night for high school hoops, but we still managed to find action on the hardwood.
Week number three of the high school football season is in the books. The cream is starting to rise to the top as New Hanover, Hoggard and South Columbus are starting to emerge from the pack in our neck of the woods as those three teams remain undefeated.
The North Carolina Coastal Federation will receive $100,000 to reduce stormwater runoff and restore water quality in the Cape Fear River Basin. The Coastal Federation's goal is to restore shell fishing and recreational uses to Bradley Creek near Wrightsville Beach.
On Monday we found out former UNCW men's basketball coach Jerry Wainwright is headed a bit closer to home. Wainwright has decided to leave Fresno State. Congratulations are in order for the UNCW surf team. They finished in third place at the national collegiate surfing championship. On top of that a UNCW Seahawk and a former Laney Buccaneer haunted the Wilmington Sharks on Monday night.
Wilmington certainly fits the bill for a cartel sub-hub. It has the obligatory major thoroughfare, I-40, which runs all the way to Barstow, CA, 2,500 miles away. Wilmington's Latinos constitute only around 6 percent of the city's population, but outlying counties like Cumberland, Sampson and Duplin have watched their Latino numbers skyrocket in the past two decades. Employment -- construction in the city and farming in the counties -- is the big draw.
Trot Nixon will be inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday. We featured Nixon on WWAY's Thursday night sports. On top of that we checked in on the regular season girls soccer finale between New Hanover and Hoggard. Plus, we featured the new women's basketball coach at UNC Wilmington, Adell Harris.

On Wednesday night the UNC Wilmington women's basketball team concluded their regular season with a win over Georgia State. The CFCC Sea Devil men's basketball nipped arch-rival Brunswick Community College. Tyler Zeller scored 30 to lead UNC over Maryland. NC State edged Miami. The New Hanover Wildcats are preparing for Thursday's high school basketball showdown with Millbrook. Plus, St. John's shutout UNCW in college baseball.
High School basketball conference tournament action will tip off on Monday. Conference tournament action will conclude on Friday. The state playoffs will begin on February 20. The pairings are set in the Three Rivers 1-A & 2-A Conference, Waccamaw 2-A & 3-A Conference, Tri County 1-A Conference, East Central 2-A Conference, Mideastern 4-A Conference, Mid South 4-A Conference and the CFIC Conference.

The UNC Wilmington men's basketball team defeated Northeastern on Wednesday night in Boston. Buzz Peterson's team is now 2-1 in the CAA. Brunswick Community College had a lead on Wednesday, but unlike the Seahawks the Dolphins were not able to hold onto their advantage against Pitt Community College.
Playing collegiate sports is a lifelong dream for some students. On Wednesday some dreams came true as student-athletes around the area put their "John Hancock" on national letters of intent.

You can help raise money for the festival and scholarship for Brunswick Community College this weekend by participating in a Texas Hold 'em Poker tournament at Antonio's Pizza in Leland. Last year's festival raised $3,000 for student scholarships at BCC.
