Senior softball team prepares for national softball tourney
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –We all know the saying, age is just a number, not a state of being. A group of men here in Wilmington are proving that to be true as they prepare to play in the National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL.
“It’s competitive,” George Allen, one of the pitchers on the team, said. “Yeah we’re older and a little slower, but it’s competitive and it’s great for your physical activity, getting physical exercise and mentally as well. Once you get in between the lines it’s competitive and you want to win.”
This team does a lot of winning. Following a five game sweep of the North Carolina Senior State games in October, this team clinched a spot in the National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL starting on June 12th. This team from Wilmington is expecting to make some noise on game day.
“We’re going to be in the same ballpark,” Jay Harrington the team’s manager, said. “We understand going there that these other teams played well to get there too. We want to be competitive, but we want to win.”
This is a group of great friends and they’ve been together on this team for quite some time. While they’re going to Alabama to bring home a championship, the would be first national title for these men, they are accomplishing something every time they step on the field.
“Winning isn’t everything, it’s important,” Allen said. “But we’re just thankful that we can do this and that we’re healthy enough. We’re not confined to a wheelchair, or a recliner or a front porch.”
