Sewer spills in Leland and Carolina Shores during Hermine

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two towns are reporting sewer spills after flooding from Tropical Storm Hermine.

According to a press release, Brunswick County Public Utilities says there was a discharge of partially treated wastewater from the Carolina Shores Friday night into early Saturday.

The release said the facility saw more than eight inches of rain from Hermine which they say was the cause of the spill. It also stated approximately 6,000 to 6,500 gallons was discharged, but all levels have returned to normal.

The Town of Leland Utilities reported a discharge of untreated wastewater from a manhole located in front of 1352 Grandiflora Drive in the Magnolia Greens Subdivision.

The town says approximately 1,650 gallons was spilled. The discharge is believed to be caused by high volume of rainwater. The town states that crews continue to monitor the sewer spill and reported it to the DENR office.
